March marks the tail end of the cool, dry season and the first hints of the coming heat. It is a brilliant month for beaches and central Vietnam, with dry skies almost everywhere and the year's crowds beginning to thin as the peak season eases.
March is dry and increasingly warm. The mainland's cool mornings give way to hotter afternoons, particularly around Bangkok and the Cambodian plains, but the humidity has yet to build.
Crucially, this remains a dry month across most of the region, so you can travel widely without worrying about the monsoon.
March is one of the loveliest months in central Vietnam. The rains have long gone, the beaches of Da Nang are warming up, and the lantern-lit old town of Hoi An is a delight to wander by night.
Pair it with the imperial city of Hue for a rich slice of Vietnamese history and cuisine.

For divers and snorkellers, March is prime time on Thailand's Andaman coast. Underwater visibility is superb, and the Similan Islands are still open before their seasonal closure in mid-May.
Expect warm, clear water and a good chance of encounters with reef fish, turtles and, if you are lucky, a passing whale shark.

As the mainland warms, March is a smart time to favour coastal and higher-altitude spots. The hills around Chiang Mai and northern Vietnam stay more comfortable, while sea breezes keep the islands pleasant.
Do be aware that late March can bring seasonal haze to parts of northern Thailand as farmers clear their fields.

With schools breaking for Easter towards the end of the month, book ahead if you are travelling in late March. Otherwise, this shoulder period often means slightly better value and fewer crowds than the January-February peak.
Stay hydrated and plan strenuous activities for the cooler mornings.
