August continues the summer pattern, with the southern islands and northern Vietnam offering the most dependable sunshine while the mainland stays lush and green. It is a lively, good-value month if you follow the dry-season pockets.
Much like July, August brings warm, humid days to the mainland with short afternoon downpours rather than persistent rain. The countryside is at its greenest and most dramatic.
Bali, the Gulf islands and northern Vietnam remain the sunniest bets, though this is also within the region's typhoon season, so coastal weather can occasionally turn.

August is still firmly in Bali's dry season, with sunny days and cooler evenings. It is prime time for surfing, diving and temple-hopping, and the neighbouring Gili Islands offer superb snorkelling with turtles.
As peak season, it pays to book ahead and seek out the calmer corners of the island for a gentler pace.

Cambodia is green and glorious in August. The moats of Angkor brim with water, mirroring the temples beautifully, and the surrounding jungle is vivid and alive.
Short daily showers keep the crowds down, so you can explore the temples in relative peace, an underrated pleasure of the green season.

Northern Vietnam is warm and green in August, with the Sapa terraces heading towards their golden September harvest. It is excellent for trekking and photography.
Ha Long Bay cruises run through the summer, but do keep an eye on typhoon forecasts, as sailings are occasionally rescheduled for safety, all the more reason to keep your plans a little flexible.
