Hanoi is a food-lover's dream and the birthplace of some of Vietnam's finest dishes. Slurp a steaming bowl of pho, try the grilled-pork noodles of bun cha, and don't leave without a sweet, thick egg coffee.
Much of the best eating happens on tiny plastic stools on the pavement. A guided street-food tour is the perfect way to eat confidently and discover local favourites.

The best times to visit Hanoi are spring (March to April) and autumn (September to November), when the weather is mild, dry and pleasant.
Winter (December to February) can be cool, grey and occasionally chilly, while summer (May to August) is hot and humid with heavier rain. Hanoi is also the natural gateway to Ha Long Bay and the mountains of Sapa.

Hanoi is excellent value. Street meals cost very little, and accommodation ranges from friendly hostels to boutique hotels in restored colonial buildings.
The compact centre is best explored on foot, with ride-hailing apps handy for longer hops. Crossing the traffic-filled streets is an art: move slowly and steadily, and the sea of scooters will flow around you.
Hanoi is the perfect starting point for a northern Vietnam adventure, and a local guide brings its layered history and hidden eateries vividly to life. A small-group trip links the capital seamlessly with Ha Long Bay and beyond.
