Interesting facts about UNESCO World Heritage Complex
Historical Significance: Wat Mahathat, or the "Monastery of the Great Relic," was one of the most important temples in Ayutthaya, serving not only as a religious center but also as a place of education and a residence for the Supreme Patriarch, the leader of the Thai Buddhist monks. It was constructed in the late 14th century during the reign of King Borommarachathirat I but underwent significant expansions and renovations in subsequent centuries.
Architectural Features: The temple is renowned for its central prang (a Khmer-style tower), which was believed to house relics of the Buddha. Surrounding the prang are numerous smaller chedis (stupas), viharas (assembly halls), and other structures that illustrate a rich tapestry of Ayutthaya-period architecture, showcasing a blend of Siamese, Khmer, Sri Lankan, and even early European influences.
Iconic Buddha Head in Tree Roots: Perhaps the most photographed and iconic feature of Wat Mahathat is the head of a sandstone Buddha statue entangled in the roots of a banyan tree. This striking image has become symbolic of Ayutthaya and represents the intersection of nature and spirituality, illustrating how historical narratives and religious devotion continue to thrive amidst the ruins.
