Information about Pu Luong
Offering spectacular limestone panoramas and terraced rice fields, Pu Luong Nature Reserve is the ideal choice for travelers who want to get off the beaten track.
Pu Luong is located 150 kilometers from the capital Hanoi. Because of this relative isolation, the valley preserves a serenity and an unequaled sweetness of life in the middle of the mountains.
Unlike tourist Sapa, in this nature reserve the life of the local people is very well preserved. Nature coexists with the tribe of "Black Thai" who have been growing rice in these magical valleys for centuries.
Interesting activities
Hike through Golden Rice Valley.
An easy hike takes us to a picturesque village, amidst the rice fields. Jagged limestone cliffs enclose the valley, which is dotted with wooden houses on stilts. Glowing green rice paddies stretch from the riverbank to the forested slopes. Women in pointed hats tend the fields, men herd buffalo and goats into their enclosures.
See the wooden water wheels.
Let's drive a short distance to nearby Ba Village and walk through the rice fields. Observe the bamboo water wheels that channel life-giving water from the streams into the rice fields. The rice grown here, unlike mountain rice, must be submerged in water to thrive. The Muong and Thai ethnic groups in this area therefore build the rolling bamboo water wheels to draw water from the low-lying streams to feed the vast rice fields.
Bamboo Rafting on the River.
Relax and unwind as you cruise down the tranquil river on traditional bamboo rafts, observing country life on both sides. Listen to the sound of the rivers, smell the fragrance of the rice paddy and watch fishermen catch fish in the crystal clear water. Unpack your lunch and have a picnic by the river with your travel companions while drinking traditional rice wine: a delicacy among the villagers.
Visit the local hill tribe market.
On the way back, we will stop at a street market where Kinh, Muong and Thai minorities from the surrounding areas hawk their home-made or harvested products. We may stop at the Don village viewpoint and take the picturesque scenery as a souvenir for those back home.
Asiaventura Plus
We stay in a simple homestay whose owner promotes sustainable tourism and cares for nature in Pu Luong. The house is very close to a clear river and a natural rock pool. You can dip your toes in the water and chat with the local tribes.
