Information about Chiang Mai
An historical city
The city of Chiang Mai, nicknamed the “Rose of the North”, is located in northern Thailand. It was officially founded in 1296 by the sovereign Mangrai and was the capital of the kingdom of Lanna until 1558. In the historic center, the surrounding wall and the moats recall its antiquity.
The northern capital
Beyond this bygone era, Chiang Mai maintained its status by becoming the economic and cultural capital of the northern kingdom in the 20th century.
The city has grown and expanded considerably in recent decades.
Its fame now goes beyond Thai borders, the historic center having become an unmissable meeting place for local and international artists. In other words, this is the place to be for creative minds!
In the area of the old town, you will find many coffee shops offering aromatic coffee, but also chic bars, craft shops and of course art galleries. A museum of contemporary art on the outskirts has recently enriched the cultural offer.
Buddhism on a daily basis
In Chiang Mai, you will marvel at dozens of Buddhist temples, including the 14th-century Wat Phra Singh and the 15th-century Wat Chedi Luang. It's very simple, a historic temple awaits you at every street corner!
The best known of all is undoubtedly Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep because its golden stupa containing sacred relics dominates the city from the mountain of which it bears the name (Doi Suthep).
In another monastery, we will suggest that you meet a monk to discuss his religion and meditation. You will be able to ask him about his daily life and the 227 rules he must scrupulously respect.
The mountains, their people and the elephants
Beyond the cultural life, the Rose du Nord also owes its charm and appeal to the bucolic landscapes that surround it.
Some mountains, including the highest in Thailand, the Doi Inthanon and its 2565 meters, still welcome people living in their villages following their customs and beliefs.
Some ethnic groups still live in harmony with elephants.
But beware: you will have to do careful research before going to meet the pachyderms, because some refuges or sanctuaries exploit these people rather than supporting them through fair and ethical tourism.
