In the heart of Siem Reap, where tourism is the main source of income for many families, the pandemic changed everything. Streets became quiet, hotels closed, and thousands of people suddenly had no work. For many women, life became especially difficult. In Cambodia, driving tourists is traditionally considered a man’s job, while women are expected to stay at home and care for the family.
During this uncertain time, a courageous woman named Nuong decided to create something different. She founded Driver ‘Srey’ Siem Reap, an association of female remorque and tuk-tuk drivers. Srey means sisters in Khmer, cambodia’s local language. Her idea was simple but powerful: give women the opportunity to earn an income, support their families, and build a future with dignity.
What makes Driver Srey special is not only that these women drive visitors around the city, but that they are breaking social barriers every day. They represent strength, independence, and hope. In a society where opportunities for women can sometimes be limited, these drivers are showing that women can do much more than what tradition expects. Nuong herself is considered a local legend in Siem Reap. With years of experience guiding and working around the floating villages of Kampong Phluk, she has become known for her warm personality, resilience, and deep knowledge of local life. During your journey, you will also have the chance to visit Kampong Phluk and hear Nuong share her personal story — a touching insight into the challenges and hopes of Cambodian women during and after the pandemic.
At Asiaventura, we deliberately avoid using large mini-coasters for tours in Siem Reap. Instead, we work closely with local drivers like the women of Driver Srey. A single day tour can mean an important income for Cambodian families who often live day by day, with little chance to save money for difficult times.
By travelling with us, our guests are not only discovering Cambodia’s beauty — they are directly supporting local women, helping families stay strong, and contributing to a more inclusive future for the community of Siem Reap.
